In victory he brought us to our feet, cheering wildly with every purposeful and powerful stride. He came to Churchill Downs undefeated, images of past champions flashing in our minds. The big bay colt didn't let us down.
Barbaros' triumph in the 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands was of historic proportion. The 6½-length winning margin was the largest since Triple Crown winner Assault in 1946. His final quarter mile clocking was the fastest since Secretariat, the fabled Triple Crown hero of 1973.
Now, a new Kentucky Derby season unfolds and Barbaro is no longer with us. His spirit, though, occupies the homestretch of Churchill Downs and stall 40 in the stakes barn at Pimlico, the stall reserved for the Kentucky Derby winner.
We hop you will treasure this commemorative magazine celebrating the life of Barbaro. Taken from the pages of The Blood-Horse, it retraces his steps along the road to the Triple Crown, his glorious Run for the Roses, and his unforgettable battle to survive.
